Pakistan and Other Muslim Countries temporarily bans ‘Barbie’

While ‘Barbie’ is winning hearts at theatres worldwide, trouble has emerged in Pakistan. Islamabad is considering a ban on the film due to its LGBTQIA+ themes, sparking opposition from extremists. The Punjab Censor Board has temporarily banned it, citing “objectionable content.” However, the ban will be lifted once the content is edited out, allowing for a later release date.

Notably, other Muslim nations like UAE, Egypt, Qatar, Iran, and Saudi Arabia have also banned the film due to their reservations about pro-LGBTQIA+ content. Russia, Vietnam, and the Philippines have banned it for different reasons, including consumerism promotion and concerns about sovereignty issues.

Despite the bans, ‘Barbie,’ directed by Greta Gerwig and starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, is garnering immense success both critically and commercially, along with its competitor ‘Oppenheimer.’ The box office rivalry continues as the two movies vie for audience attention. 🏳️‍🌈
